SHM Advocacy at Work

Career Development Committees: A Guide for Early- and Mid-Career Faculty
Traditionally, faculty at academic medical centers have been promoted based on research. Although some institutions have created clinician-educator and expert clinician tracks, advancement in hospital medicine is lagging. A career development committee offers critical, objective guidance to early- and mid-career faculty. This committee supports overall career development and long-term goals, differing from mentorship teams that focus on specific projects. Here, the author outlines the benefits of such committees, how to create one, and strategies to maximize its effectiveness, referring to early- and mid-career faculty as “mentees.”
