The Society of Hospital Medicine and Wiley are happy to announce that The Hospitalist has received an APEX Award of Excellence this year for content published in 2024.
The October 2024 issue was honored with an Award of Excellence for Magazines—Writing (entire issue). The issue included articles on co-management programs, physician orders for life-sustaining treatment, substance use disorders, voting for hospitalized patients, finding your dream job out of residency, and roadmaps for new DEI officers in hospital medicine programs.
“Our members tell us how valuable they find content in The Hospitalist, and having this affirmed by receiving an APEX Award of Excellence demonstrates SHM’s commitment to developing quality, hospitalist-focused resources,” said Eric E. Howell, MD, MHM, Chief Executive Officer of the Society of Hospital Medicine. “Thank you to our editorial team, contributing writers, and subject matter experts for their integral roles in keeping hospitalists abreast of updates in the field.”
The Awards for Publication Excellence (APEX) program recognizes excellence in publishing by professional communicators. APEX Awards are based on excellence in graphic design, editorial content, and the ability to achieve overall communication excellence. APEX Awards of Excellence recognize exceptional entries in individual subcategories.

“This award is a testament to the skill and dedication of our editorial staff and board members, who have successfully navigated a rapidly evolving medical landscape while keeping The Hospitalist focused and relevant,” said Weijen Chang, MD, FAAP, SFHM, the physician editor of The Hospitalist, and pediatric and adult hospitalist at Baystate Medical Center and Baystate Children’s Hospital, associate professor of pediatrics at the University of Massachusetts Medical School Baystate, and chief of pediatric hospital medicine and vice-chair for clinical affairs at Baystate Children’s Hospital, all in Springfield, Mass. “Their efforts—along with the invaluable contributions of SHM members—ensure that our content continues to serve the needs and interests of hospitalists nationwide.”
The Hospitalist has received 12 APEX Awards since its inaugural issue in 1997.
