The photo on the left is of my teenage daughter Remy and me on a recent medical mission trip to Guyana, where our volunteer medical team served around 1,500 patients in one week. I chose to become a doctor to help others by providing the best care possible, and volunteer experiences during college solidified my path to becoming a hospitalist. Having the opportunity to provide care in another country and to collaborate with local doctors was rewarding. Getting a glimpse into how others live and how providers practice internationally was such a privilege.
The photo on the right is of me, Remy, and my husband, Mazer, from this same medical mission trip. This medical mission was made even more special since I got to share the experience with my family, especially with our daughter, who, one day, may become a member of the next generation of healthcare providers. Witnessing her ability to connect with others and to shepherd patients and their loved ones through the doctor encounter, optometry evaluation, and pharmacy in our free clinic was inspiring and reminded me that the compassionate care we provide matters.
